Location

Grand Bahama is the home of Freeport/Lucaya, the nation's second city, with a faster pace and a more cosmopolitan atmosphere than the Old World sophistication of Nassau.

Grand Bahama has in recent years enjoyed considerable interest in business investment and real estate. Modern telecommunications now create the possibility of combining a relaxed lifestyle with a business investment.

Freeport/Lucaya is a sportsperson's paradise, with championship golf, tennis, scuba diving, and fishing. In fact, it was designed especially for your pleasure.

Forty years ago Freeport/Lucaya didn't exist; today, it's a fantasy vacation made real on the shores of Grand Bahama. It is also an outstanding property investment. For unadulterated pleasure, there's no better getaway in The Bahamas.

The villa

In the Bahamas, all houses are currently in one design which is the San Salvador. These houses come complete with 4/5 bedrooms and swimming pool. Instead of each house standing on an individual plot facing the road, the villas in the Bahamas are set in circles containing 4 houses with a central area which in some groups contains a water feature. Each villa is on a lot of approximately 1/3 of an acre. In the Bahamas, the 'pool cage' is not used and the pool area does not include a spa. You will find the same high standard of building in the Bahamas with our Bahamian builder having responsibility for building holiday villas in Florida. These houses are built on a I0-acre site just a four-minute walk away from a white sandy beach. The price of a house in the Bahamas includes the cost of the land, but not the cost of furnishings.

The features you would expect to find in a San Salvador are:

  • Solar heated swimming pool
  • Large pool deck area
  • All carpets and floor coverings
  • Tiles in the entrance area
  • Up lighting and down lighting where appropriate
  • Fans in all the principal rooms where appropriate

Property investment in Grand Bahama means that unlike the USA, Bahamian Immigration rules state that permanent residency can be applied for if you invest over $500,000 in your holiday property, this investment could be a permanent home instead of a holiday home.

The overall borrowing to purchase a house in the Bahamas cannot exceed 50% of the purchase price of the property, but can include the cost of furnishings for the villas so long as the total does not exceed the 50%. Build time is approximately 12 months. No completion date can be given until the Certificate of Occupancy has been granted by the BBR (Bahamian Building Regulators). In order to reduce the construction time, it may be possible under certain cumstances to purchase a house under construction.

The area

Freeport/Lucaya isn't the whole of Grand Bahama. The island itself has been settled for centuries, providing a rustic environment -- if you want one -- to your stay.

The easternmost edge of the island has beaches that are entirely deserted. The towns of the West End, which during prohibition were a hideout for rum-runners, have an Old World charm. In the parks of the island, one can find remnants of the island's earliest Arawak civilizations, and the more recent intrusion by pirates.

Grand Bahama does in fact have hidden histories and a deliciously shady past. With an emerald ocean that can perhaps be called the most vividly colorful in all of the islands, and a landscape on which everything from ultramodern resorts to deserted sands can be found, unchanged since the days of the buccaneers, Grand Bahama holds the potential for every sort of Caribbean vacation.

Where else could you shop at an all-day International Bazaar, explore one of the largest underwater caves, stroll an exotic nature land in search of flamingos, swim with dolphins, and come face to face with sharks -- all in one day? You'll certainly want to take advantage of the East End's deserted beaches for an extended period of tropical relaxation. After all, it was the native Bahamians, the Arawaks, who invented the ultimate in relaxation: the hammock.

Although virtually any type of international food can be found in The Bahamas, it would be a mistake to miss an opportunity to sample the local cuisine. No matter where you are, you won't have any difficulty finding plenty of restaurants serving cuisine -- especially Bahamian cuisine and fresh local seafood at reasonable prices.
