Accommodation

The Area:
This is traditional Austria, unspoilt with its culture intact. The Austrians come here in the spring summer and autumn for mountain walking, climbing and to enjoy country life. In winter they come for winter sports.
The scenery is unbelievably lovely, magnificent mountains, delightful hamlets, ancient castles and churches. The location is excellent, only one hour from Salzburg, home of the famous summer music festival; Venice can be reached in three hours and the Italian Alps in one hour. Vienna is three hours by car.

The village:
St. Michael is all that one would wish to find in a typical Austrian village. Traditional alpine buildings and a little church surrounded by high peaked mountains and forested hillsides.

There is plenty of good shopping, a first class bakery and patisserie, home grown local produce, good restaurants and most facilities. Nearby Tamsweg (17 km) has more. English is spoken almost everywhere.

The chalet (sleeps 8/9)
It is situated in the woods above the village and commands lovely views over the village and across to the surrounding mountains. It is reached up a narrow tarmac lane (2 kms from village) which then becomes a trackway. The house is at the end.

In winter a 4WD vehicle is essential but in summer a normal car can be used. Both types can be hired in the village.
A pathway goes to the village - 10 minutes walk down; 20 minutes up.

Set in an acre of ground the chalet has a small driveway leading to the front door. Inside there is a hallway with WC and shower room; small kitchen with double sink, electric cooker, fridge, freezer, dishwasher and good fitted cupboards. The living room is spacious with comfortable sofas, dining table for 8, log fire and large sliding glass doors which open onto a stone terrace. Outside there is a summer dining area and BBQ. The main bedroom with bathroom (shower) en suite also has a sauna. It has a double sofa and table, glass doors open onto the stone terrace. A wooden stairway leads from the bedroom up to a mezzanine area with cathedral timbered ceiling and roof window. It has 2 single beds.

The Apartment:
The small apartment has its own front door, but it interconnects with the main bedroom by double sound proof doors. It has a small kitchenette and bathroom (bath), living area with sofabed, table and chairs.
A wooden stairway leads up to a mezzanine area with 3 single beds - well spaced out. It has a cathedral timbered ceiling with roof window.

The house is comfortably and attractively furnished to a good standard and very well equipped for up to 10 persons. All rooms have electric heating.

The apartment which is included when the whole chalet is rented can also be rented separately, but is only available during the low season periods.
It is unlikely that the rest of the house will be occupied when the apartment is rented, but occasionally the owners, who live near Vienna, may be in residence.

There is a local representative who will see visitors in and out of the property to explain how things work and where things are in the home and the village.

The summer:
From late spring to early autumn the area offers an abundance of rural activities, walking, climbing, mountain biking, tennis, an 18-hole golf course, riding, swimming and white water rafting.
A wealth of wild flowers can be found from May to August - from bluebells and primroses to unusual alpine.
St. Michael is an excellent base from which to explore Austria - Salzburg, Vienna, the Tyrol or into Italy. The country festivities take place during the summer months.

The winter:
The local saying is that the snow, in this area, is as guaranteed as the Bank of England! It offers some of the best skiing in Austria and there is usually snow from early December to May.
There are 63 lifts, 300km of piste as well as 225km of cross country routes.
This is not the Austria of the tourists, so prices are very reasonable.
There is a well run ski school catering for skiers of all levels; the children's facilities are excellent.

Distances

Salzburg 1 hour, Vienna 3 hours.
