Northern Costa Blanca- Where the mountains greet the sea The northern Costa Blanca … where the mountains greet the sea and clean, white sandy beaches or rocky, pebbled coves. In fact, it’s one of the most dramatic coastlines in the whole of Spain. In sharp contrast to the southern half of the Costa, you can expect breathtaking mountain views as well as lush vegetation at every turn … oranges, lemons, almond and olive groves, and grapevines all growing in abundance. It’s an area much favoured by Europeans not only for its beauty but also for its all year round climate … the northern Costa Blanca is blessed with no less than 325 sunny days a year and the temperature rarely drops below 15 degrees even in winter. As for rainfall, the worst scenario averages at five wet days per month … so imagine the best! Running north from the major city of Alicante, it stretches for miles and miles up towards historical Valencia, passing by wonderful Spanish villages and towns … special places like Moraira, Javea, Calpe, Denia, the Jalon and Orba Valleys, and Altea. Each with something different to offer … something a little unique. Take a look at the ‘Out and about’ section to find out more. The northern Costa Blanca tends to appeal to those who want an easier, more relaxing pace of life. Those that want to experience ‘real Spain’ … those who want to blend in with the typical Spanish lifestyle and culture … and there’s plenty of it. You’ll find reminders of the past in all directions and invitations to join the Spanish in their traditional festivals and fiestas in constant supply. The northern Costa Blanca is serviced by three international airports … Alicante and Valencia being the most popular with daily flights; and Murcia (south of Alicante) used by a smaller number of British operators. In addition, it can be reached by rail (from London via Paris and Barcelona, with the option to go by Eurostar part of the way) or road … a very picturesque and pleasant journey. The A-7 motorway, far less cluttered than roads in the UK, runs all the way from the French border down the coast. Signs are easy to follow, leaving you to concentrate only on which side of the road you are travelling! The coastal road will add time to your journey but makes for some spectacular scenery along the way. |
