Larnaca's name is derived from the Greek word 'Larnax' meaning 'ditch' or 'sarcophagus,' due to the many burial ditches found locally of the ancient city if Kition. The Ancient City if Kition was one of the most important ancient cities with earliest architectural remains dating back to the 13th century B.C. the area was rebuilt by Archaean Greeks. Remains of the Cyclopean Walls, made of giant blocks and the complex of the five temples. Another place of interest is the magnificent Orthodox Church of St. Lazarus was built in the town over the tomb of St. Lazarus, in the 9th Century. The marble sarcophagus can be seen inside the church. There are many restaurants and tavernas to choose from with fish and meze being a speciality. The promenade is an especially popular place to dine. Try a meze, houmous, taramasalata, fried halloumi cheese, salads kebabs, and kleftiko - lamb cooked in a clay pot. Situated at the end of the promenade is the resorts lovely marina, frequented by yachtsmen from all parts of the world and at the western end is the towns 17th century fort. There are also a couple of discos for you to choose from as well as more traditional Cypriot-style entertainment at the intimate bars and restaurants. On the outskirts of Larnaca is a large salt lake that is home in the cooler months to graceful colonies of flamingos and other migratory birds. In a peaceful setting on the edge of the salt lake lies the Hala Sultan Tekesi, built to the memory of Prophet Mohammed's aunt. A new tourist area has been developed to the east of the town along a stretch of sandy beach with water sports available. With a well appointed shopping centre in the main town and numerous facilities Larnaca is a popular tourist resort. Ayia Napa Unlimited nightlife and fantastic beaches makes Ayia Napa ideal for sun and fun worshippers. Once a small fishing village, Ayia Napa has a picturesque harbour fringed with restaurants and tavernas. It is the ideal place to try out the local specialities, relax and watch the world go by. There a numerous restaurants offering a wide range of cuisine are situated throughout the resort with something for every taste. As the sun sets the resort come to life with a fabulous range of night life. Additionally, Ayia Napa hosts many well appointed shops, mainly around the square, that cater for all your needs including a marvellous range of souvenirs. The town can also boast a superb Venetian monastery with a central octagonal fountain which lends character and substance to a resort that tends to be more for its beaches, colourful shops, tavernas, discos and bars. Ayia Napa's lovely golden beaches are, without a doubt, the main attraction of this lively resort. The most famous beach is Nissi beach with its beautiful white sand and crystal clear waters. Protaras This rapidly expanding resort, situated between Ayia Napa and Paralimni, offers spectacular scenery and golden sandy beaches making it ideal for sun worshippers. A relaxed haven that is suitable for both families and couples. Protaras boasts numerous wonderful beaches, although the beautiful beach of Fig Tree Bay with it's fabulous golden sands, crystal clear waters and idyllic coves has to be the most famous. There are many water sports on offer, including scuba diving. There is a wide range of evenings entertainment. Once can spend an evening enjoying a meal in one of the numerous tavernas or restaurants or visit one of the many bars Protaras has to offer. Protaras also boasts two discos for those seeking a lively night out and only 10kms away is Ayia Napa with it's bustling night life for a wider selection. Paralimni Originally Paralimni was a small agricultural village built on the shores of a shallow lake, hence its name which means "settlement by the lake". However, the lake is now dry and the modern city bears little resemblance to its sleepy rural beginnings. Paralimni is renowned for its dancers and folk poets, who are regarded as some of the island's best. A tradition that has passed down through the generations A number of quiet bars and cafes can be found in and around the square. These make a very pleasant change from the noisy English disco-bars of Protaras and the moronic banter of the English DJs. For the tourist the shops are very good for ceramics. These range from licensed copies of ancient museum pieces to modern original creations. Prices are cheaper than nearby Protaras. Within the town square are three churches and an open air theatre. The most interesting church is the oldest. It is open to the public and now serves as a museum. Inside there is a collection of icons, religious robes and a few interesting old photos and portraits. Paralimni has lovely beaches and the most well known in the area is Fig Tree Bay in Protaras area. Protaras is part of Paralimni which is more familiarly referred to as "the land of windmills" maintaining the nostalgic quality of the past. Picturesque but geared for tourism, Protaras has lovely sandy white beaches, and many restaurants, pubs and clubs. Interested
