The Aegean region According to Herodotus, the 'father of history' who featured strongly in 'The English Patient', the Aegean coast has, "the most beautiful sky and the best climate in the world." Here, long sandy beaches, secret coves, green olive trees, rocks and pine forests surround crystal clear waters. The climate is mild and sea breezes cool the hottest summer days. The Aegean truly offers something for everybody: charming fishing harbours and beautiful natural sights, sunny beaches and sleepy holiday villages, modern watersports and historical locations as well as first class restaurants and Turkish bazaars. In a region where countless events of history and mythology took place, you will stumble across the theatres, temples and agoras of ancient civilisations at every turn. The city of Troy immortalized by Homer and Pergamum, and the capital city of one of the most powerful kingdoms of the day, is to be found on Aegean soil. Bodrum seems to effortlessly combine ancient and modern, offering beautiful beaches, watersports, a brand new marina, excellent shopping, traditional bazaars, dining and nightlife, alongside its proud cultural and historical heritage. One of the most popular tourist centres, Bodrum offers you the pleasures of shopping in the lively city centre, relaxing on the beach and enjoying the colourful nightlife which carries on until the first light next morning! What's more, the splendid waters around Bodrum offer a superb diving destination with its reefs, caves and teeming sea life. The region is famous for its diving and attracts many diving enthusiasts every year. While over in the city centre, you'll find the Tomb of King Mausolus, which is one of the Seven Wonders of the World, along with Bodrum Castle, a fine example of architecture from the period of the Crusades. Bodrum has a new modern airport with several flights from Istanbul arriving daily. The second largest town on the Bodrum peninsula, Turgutreis offers the visitor a glimpse of real Turkish life combined with enough sport and leisure activities to suit everyone's tastes. Turgutreis is named after the great Turkish Admiral of the same name who was born there in the 16th century. Known in the west as Dragut, Turgutreis is known mainly for taking part in the Ottoman siege of Malta. In fact, a few kilometres outside of town a waterfront memorial marks the place where he first set sail. Today, the town has a newly-built marina, a dazzling array of cafes and bars, and a range of popular restaurants around the harbour serving typical Turkish specialities. Nightlife is lively too, with a handful of extremely tempting beachside bars and clubs all with a special Turkish flavour. Turgutreis is also famous for its long stretch of sandy beaches and safe, shallow waters, making it ideal for families with young children. Windsurfers love it too, thanks to the prevailing sea breezes. Located on a bay surrounded by mountains brimming with pine trees, Marmaris is situated where the Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean meet. The city is a busy, bustling holiday town with modern hotels, many local and international restaurants, great shops, lovely beaches and plenty of nightlife! Marmaris has been under the rule of Egypt, Ionia, Lydia and Persia in turn, and the fortress built by Sultan Süleyman in the 1500's nestles comfortably in the centre of town. From Marmaris, you can also make a two day tour to Efes and Pamukkale, where you will see the House of the Virgin Mary, the Temple of Artemis and a 200 year old amphitheatre. The waters surrounding Marmaris are excellent for a range of activities including swimming, diving and yachting, and the beaches are perfect for young children thanks to their sheltered location. You can also swim in Pamukkale, where the waters are believed to have restorative properties, to help you feel younger and healthier. Its crystal clear waters also make Marmaris a very popular sailing resort. There's a huge marina here with magnificent yachts moored up, many owned by a selection of the town's rich and famous visitors! You can also go on organised boat trips or charter a boat, either with or without a crew, depending on your seafaring prowess. Among the most famous cities of the ancient world, Ephesus was one of the largest and most prestigious cities of the Roman era. Ephesus was a centre for philosophy and critical thinking and is now a treasure trove of riches from Ionian culture. At Ephesus you'll find the Temple of Artemis, another of the seven wonders of the ancient world, as well as countless statues, theatres, libraries, markets and smaller temples. In Yalikavak, charming white-washed houses with cascading bougainvillaea line the narrow streets, and the many small cafes and shops, and the occasional windmill create a truly authentic Turkish ambience. Yalikavak is still home to a thriving fishing industry and it has been one of the most important fishing centres on the Turkish Aegean, home to fleets of fishermen and sponge divers alike. Visiting yachts and working fishing boats moor cheerfully together in the picturesque harbour, where the restaurants clustered around display a wide selection of fresh fish every day. There are many shops in the traffic-free centre, and every week the town hosts one of the biggest fruit, vegetable and clothing markets in the area. There is a small beach, and it's just as comfortable to sit in a waterside cafe and while away a relaxing hour or two. A number of buildings in the town have been tastefully restored - a former water cistern has become a small art gallery and a former olive oil press has been converted into a kilim showroom where visitors are more than welcome. As well as attracting holidaymakers, Yalikavak is also a favourite destination of Turks who live in the cities. In fact, in the months of July and August visiting celebrities descend on the village, bringing a certain sophistication to the area! Choose the best holiday property to buy in Turkey
